Playing with kitties

You must admit that I’m pretty weird to go volunteer at animal shelter when I have a perfectly good cat waiting for me at home. But volunteer I did, and it actually made me appreciate the little furball that I already have.

The Queens Animal Center is a no-kill shelter for cats and dogs, located right off Queens Blvd, near the mall. The have volunteers coming in to walk the dogs, clean out the cages, and play with the animals. It’s an even exchange, in my opinion: the people get the benefits of having a pet without having to actually own one, and the animals get affection and clean cages.

They have a lot of kittens that they’ve rescued. It’s sad how some of these babies may not find a home. They were all so soft and small, and the crazy cat lady in me was yearning to take one home to foster. I know that I don’t have the funds (and space) to get another one, but I could at least take care of one temporarily.

Behavior modification

Been trying out something new with the cat. As I’ve mentioned before, these past many months, he’s been waking me up at 4 am for a feeding. I’m really tired of being half-dead in the mornings because I’ve been awake since early morning for the cat.

So, all this week, I’ve been delaying the morning meal till when minutes when I have to step out of the apartment. I’m sure his small feline brain is wondering why the sudden change in routine, but I’m the mommy in this relationship, I know what’s good for him (and more importantly, for me).

I really hope this works.

Or, I guess I could get a Roomba and a pair of kitty-size goggles.

Sleep feeding

One of the things that I’ve been missing lately is an full, undisturbed night of sleep. Don’t get me wrong — I don’t have problems falling asleep or getting rest, but there is something that wakes me up like clockwork around 4 am each morning.

Yes, the cat.

I think it’s my own fault for spoiling him and giving in to his whims, but when he’s pitifully whining, I’ve found it difficult to lie there and pretend to be asleep. It’s even worse when he’s aware that I’m awake and ignoring him — he then proceeds to tear up my room, gnawing on stray pieces of paper on the desk, or on the floor. He knows me well, that one.

I’m glad that cat food cans have pop-top lids. Could you imagine the possible catastrophes that I would end up with if I needed to use a can opener while I’m half-asleep?

Renji and me

I think I would only post pictures of myself if it included my cat.

And cat makes three

It’s Valentine’s Day and my date is huddled underneath my bed. Usually, he likes checking other chicks out from the window, but I know tonight, all he is wants is to be with me.
